"Iris, what are you doing?" Helen demands, hands on her perfectly curved hips.   
"I'm looking for a book," I say. I'm going to be nice to her. I'm so tired of fighting with Jake, so tired of letting a walking pin-up come between us.   
"Oh," she says, voice softening. She walks over to the shelf squeezed by the bedside and under the window to lean down next to me. "For school?"   
"Yeah."   
"What are you looking for?"   
"Bullfinch's Mythology."

 "It's nice to finally see you, Iris," says Ms. Herbert. I swear to God William's is like a wolf in sheep's clothing: public and accepting on the outside, preppy on the inside. Everyone sweeps me up and down with their eyes, from my glinting silver highlights to my Doc Martens.   
 I slide into my seat in the front row. Every quarter she gives us a new "randomized" seating chart. Somehow I always end up in the front row. I assume this is because she suspects I'm going to set something on fire if I'm in the back, but I'm open to other theories, as always.

The Protector Chapter 2Chapter 2- Dead Beats and Dead Bolts   
 Hangovers are the worst. I'm in line at Starbucks, waiting to nurse mine with some Passion tea.  
 
 "What can I get you?" asks the barista impatiently. Cars snake around the drive-thru and I can see at least five people working, cursing that the cinnamon dolce flavor's out and the soy milk's out and the Splenda is out and "Damn it, why can't people order a regular drink?!" is written across all their faces. People in cars seem more impatient than people like me, actually inside for the café ambience and relative peace.
